Social Innovation is a course that prepares students (5th-8th grades) to be active global citizens and socially aware community members. Students research problems that touch on foundational concepts such as equal opportunity, human rights, ethics and social justice, and in small teams identify a social problem they would like to generate a solution for via an innovative service or a product.
As students work on these problems a team of VCs from the local community offer workshops on market research, scalability, creating viable business plans and pitching ideas, with the objective of the students taking innovative products and services to market.
In this unique course every student is both an entrepreneur and an investor in other students' projects. To better research ideas and solutions students are provided with opportunities to engage in service learning. The Social Innovation course is an experiential approach centered around meaningful volunteer opportunities, innovative problem solving, EQ competencies and social awareness.
