Community Programs

"Synapse truly provides a unique education to our children. Our family is deeply grateful to be part of such a caring, dedicated, and innovative community."Synapse Parent

Community at Synapse

We are a community that places strong emphasis on relationships. From our pillar of social-emotional learning to our community-wide values of taking care of each other, being positive, and going all in, we embody our mission of educating a community of change makers. We remind ourselves that being a change maker can be small - impacting someone's day in a joyful way - and we have fun!

Our community programs are intentional and support our larger school community in many of the same priorities we have for our students.

Community in the Outdoors

A SynC tradition since 2012, Family Camp is an intentional practice of the Synapse community where we unplug from our everyday routines and conveniences, connect with the broader Synapse community and explore the natural environment. In previous years, Family Camp has been an entire weekend spent at Little Basin Campground in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Little Basin is a very special place that suited our community well. Sadly, during the CZU Complex Fire in 2020 the campground sustained significant damage.

In 2022, SynC kicked off a new Family Day Camp tradition at Huddart Park here in Redwood City, to great success. We also plan to add weekday and weekend hikes for parents and families to the 22-23 school calendar to continue the Family Camp mission of unplug, connect, and explore. All activities are voluntary, so you can choose what your family enjoys.

Community in Music

The Constructivists is Synapse’s parent - teacher cover band. Anyone is welcome, no matter skill level or prior experience, and many community members end up picking up old, forgotten instruments in order to join the Constructivists. Many of our long-term band members are also able to help teach new instruments, and we all work together to help iron out creases when practicing songs. Parents and teachers from across levels participate. This is an important way that Synapse forges community relationships beyond a traditional parent-teacher connection.

Weekly rehearsals through the Spring culminate in a community-wide sold out rock concert in June that is one of the highlights of the end of the school year.
