Level I

In Kindergarten specific self-science lessons are taught by our SEL specialist. Students learn how to identify how they are feeling, how to express themselves, communicate with each other, and advocate for themselves, with emphasis on:  

• Healthy communication skills (initiating play, sharing, conflict resolution, listening and speaking)

• A positive sense of self and rewarding relationships with others

• A focus on differences instead of deficits

• Enhance emotional literacy
• Learn how to navigate emotions
• Apply consequential thinking

Students learn language arts throughout the classroom experience as well as in small literacy groups. These activities include:

• Interactive storytelling and read alouds
• Dramatic play
• Storytelling through journaling and drawing
• Phonemic awareness activities to develop letter-sound relationships
• Concepts of print
• Fine motor development (e.g. pencil grip, scissors, handwriting, etc.)
• Vocabulary development
• Library time
• Explorations in multi-genre research paper, creative writing and persuasive writing

Opportunities to learn numeracy and math are integrated throughout daily activities as well as during dedicated math workshops with our Math specialists. Using stories, manipulatives, and authentic materials (e.g. puzzles, games, etc.), students will:

• Explore measurement, addition, and subtraction and concepts such as shapes in geometry
• Measurement, addition, subtraction and introduction to shapes and geometry
• Develop 1-1 correspondence, counting, cardinality, and comparison skills
• Know number names and practice counting a sequence or telling a number of objects
• Represent, compare, and order whole numbers; join and separate sets
• Identify, analyze, compare, and create shapes
• Measure and compare attributes of objects

As young scientists, students will engage in experiments to learn about the world around them as they dive into Earth, Life and Physical Sciences. Their explorations will include: 

• How to make observations, predications and hypotheses
• Weather
• Plants, Animals and Ecosystems
• Engineering and Design Projects

Social Studies are taught through integrative projects that can last a lesson or a trimester. As our young change makers naturally have a strong sense of fairness and justice, they go deeper in their learning concepts and perspectives in Equity, Inclusion & Diversity. Students learn through their experiences and empathy through simulations and dramatic play.

Level I students engage their creativity throughout their classroom experience and in the Visual Arts & Design studio. Creating and expressing themselves are key components of the Kindergarten experience. They will learn:

• Line and shapes through patterns and emotions.
• Textures
• Color theory

Our Kindergartners start every morning with music and movement with our Performing Arts specialists. Students engage in:

• Music, dance, and drama
• Patterns and computational thinking with music and movement
• Sharing ideas with others through music, dance and drama
• Singing, ear training, vocal technique
